Real gold doesn't tarnish β but lotion, sweat, and everyday oils build up in the links and dull that shine over time. The good news: bringing a gold chain back to full sparkle takes about five minutes with things you already have at home. Here's the safe way to clean and care for a real 10K or 14K gold chain, plus the few things you should never do.
The 5-minute at-home clean
- Mix a gentle bath. Warm (not hot) water with a couple of drops of mild dish soap. That's it β no harsh chemicals.
- Soak for 10β15 minutes. This loosens the oils trapped between the links.
- Brush gently. Use a soft toothbrush to work into the grooves β especially important for rope and Figaro chains, where dirt hides in the twists.
- Rinse well. In clean warm water, so no soap film is left behind. (Tip: rinse in a bowl, not the sink, so a slip doesn't send it down the drain.)
- Dry fully. Pat with a soft, lint-free cloth and let it air-dry completely before storing.
Do this every few weeks for a chain you wear daily, and it'll look new for years.
What to avoid
- No toothpaste, baking soda, or abrasive cleaners. They scratch the gold's surface, especially on polished chains.
- No bleach or chlorine. Take gold off before pools and hot tubs β chlorine can weaken the alloy over time.
- No ultrasonic cleaners on chains with stones or hollow links unless a jeweler says it's safe.
- Don't sleep or shower in it if you want to keep it its best; and put it on last, after lotion, perfume, and hairspray.
How to store it
Store each chain separately β a soft pouch or a lined box β so pieces don't scratch each other. Lay chains flat or hang them so they don't kink; this matters most for rope and Franco chains. Keep gold away from heat and direct sunlight for long periods.
When to bring it to a jeweler
At-home care handles the shine. See a pro for: a loose or worn clasp, a stretched or thinning link, a professional deep polish, or re-checking the setting on a diamond or stone piece. We do all of this in-store β and every piece we sell is backed by a lifetime warranty.

- Never use toothpaste, abrasives, or chlorine.
- Store separately, flat or hung, and put it on last.
- Need a clasp fixed or a deep polish? We handle it in-store, from the Diamond District since 2012.
