The diamond jewelry market in 2026 has three distinct categories of stones that are sometimes sold in ways that obscure their differences: natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and cubic zirconia. Understanding what each is — and what each is not — is essential before making a purchase. This guide is direct about the differences because the differences are real and financially significant.
Natural Diamonds — What They Are
Natural diamonds are carbon crystals formed under extreme pressure and heat deep within the earth over billions of years and brought to the surface through volcanic activity. They are mined from deposits in South Africa, Russia, Canada, Botswana, and other locations worldwide. Their rarity, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest natural substance), and optical properties (high refractive index that creates brilliance and fire) make them the standard of fine jewelry gemstones.
Natural diamonds retain value over time. The price of natural diamonds is influenced by supply and demand for scarce material — supply is finite and decreasing as existing mines deplete. A natural diamond purchased today will be worth a meaningful percentage of its original price in 20 years. This is not speculation — it is the historical performance of natural diamonds as a commodity.
Natural diamonds are graded by the 4 Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. SI clarity (slightly included) means inclusions exist but are not visible to the naked eye. VS clarity (very slightly included) means inclusions are extremely minor and not visible even with magnification at low power. VVS means virtually flawless. All of these grades produce stones that appear perfect to the naked eye — the practical difference is in certification and resale value, not in appearance during wear.
Lab-Grown Diamonds — What They Are
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds. They are composed of carbon in the same crystal structure as natural diamonds. A trained gemologist cannot distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a natural diamond without specialized equipment. They have the same hardness (10 Mohs), the same refractive properties, and the same optical appearance.
The difference is origin: lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment in weeks or months, not over billions of years underground. This makes them significantly less scarce than natural diamonds. The price of lab-grown diamonds has declined consistently since 2018 and continues to decline as production technology improves and scales. A lab-grown diamond purchased today will be worth significantly less than its original price in 10 years — the market has demonstrated this clearly since lab-grown became mainstream.

We do not sell lab-grown diamonds represented as natural, and we disclose clearly whenever a piece uses lab-grown stones (typically in our lab-grown diamond Cuban link chains, where it is stated explicitly in the product name).
Cubic Zirconia — What It Is
Cubic zirconia is a synthetic crystal made from zirconium dioxide. It has no relationship to diamonds chemically or physically — it is a completely different material that resembles diamonds in appearance. CZ is not a diamond. It is not a gemstone of significant value. It scores 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are 10), meaning it scratches more readily than diamonds under daily wear. Over months and years of wear, CZ stones cloud and dull in a way that natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds do not.
CZ is widely used in fine gold jewelry as a cost-effective accent stone. At FJNYC, we use CZ in pieces where natural diamonds would be significantly disproportionate to the gold value — small accent stones in pendant bails, initial pendants with CZ accents, and budget-friendly pieces specifically labeled as CZ. Every piece that contains CZ is clearly identified as such in its title and description. CZ is not sold as diamond in any FJNYC product.
The Value Comparison
Natural diamonds hold value. Lab-grown diamonds depreciate. CZ has no gem value. If the purpose of a diamond purchase includes any element of long-term value — as a gift for a daughter who will have it decades, as a meaningful heirloom, as a piece whose value is part of its significance — only natural diamonds deliver that property.
If the purpose is purely aesthetic — maximum visual appearance at minimum cost — lab-grown diamonds provide indistinguishable visual quality from natural diamonds at a fraction of the price. The trade-off is that the piece will be worth very little in resale. CZ provides the lowest cost with the most significant visual degradation over time.
How to Verify What You Are Buying
Ask before purchasing: are these natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, or CZ? A legitimate seller answers this immediately. If the answer is evasive, the stone is probably not natural. Ask for the clarity grade — natural diamonds are graded SI, VS, VVS, etc. CZ has no grading system. Lab-grown diamonds have the same grading system as natural diamonds but should be identified as lab-grown.
