Gold Chain Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Length and Width for Your Chain

The right chain size depends on your body, the style, whether you will add a pendant and the look you want. Use measurements as a starting point, not as a gender rule.

Common lengths

16 in: short fit on many adults. 18 in: around the collarbone area for many wearers. 20–22 in: lower placement and more room for many pendants. 24–30 in: progressively longer drop. Exact placement varies by neck, chest and body size.

Common width ranges

1–2 mm: fine/discreet. 3–4 mm: moderate presence. 5–7 mm: stronger visual presence. 8 mm+: statement scale. These are visual descriptions, not recommendations for every wearer.

Width does not tell you weight

A hollow and solid chain can have similar outside width and very different grams. Always check construction and approximate weight.

For pendants

Confirm the bail’s interior width and height, the chain’s end/clasp dimensions and the pendant weight. A chain that looks right may still be physically incompatible.

Measure before ordering

Use a flexible tape or a chain you already own to preview the length. For bracelets and rings, measure the wrist or finger separately.
