The price of a real gold chain in 2026 depends on four variables: karat, gram weight, construction (solid or hollow), and the seller's margin. Every legitimate price can be derived from these four numbers. Every price that cannot be derived from them — that is significantly above or below the expected range — warrants an explanation before purchase.
This guide gives you the price ranges for real gold chains at every significant specification, based on 2026 gold market prices and over a decade of selling from the NYC Diamond District.
How Gold Chain Prices Are Calculated
The base value of any gold chain is the metal it contains. The formula:
Metal value = (Gold spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1) × karat purity factor × gram weight
Karat purity factors: 10K = 0.417, 14K = 0.583, 18K = 0.750
At a gold spot price of approximately $3,000 per troy ounce (representative 2026 price):
- 10K gold value per gram: approximately $40.24
- 14K gold value per gram: approximately $56.27
- 18K gold value per gram: approximately $72.35
Manufacturing adds approximately $8 to $20 per gram depending on chain complexity. A legitimate jeweler's retail margin adds another 15 to 30 percent over manufacturing cost. These numbers give you the floor and ceiling of any fair price.

Price Ranges for Hollow Chains
Hollow chains weigh approximately 20 to 35 percent as much as solid chains of equal dimensions. At the same width and length, a hollow chain should cost proportionally less — not the same or similar to a solid chain. A 5mm Cuban link chain at 22 inches in 14K hollow weighs approximately 12 to 18 grams (vs 45 grams solid). The fair price for that hollow chain is $850 to $1,300 — not $3,000. If a seller charges solid prices for hollow weight, you are paying for gold that is not there.
What Prices That Are Too Low Mean
A 5mm Cuban link in 14K at 22 inches for $300 is not a deal. The metal value alone of a solid version is over $2,500. At $300, one of three things is true: the chain is hollow with a few grams of gold, the chain is not 14K, or the dimensions are not what the listing states. There is no legitimate explanation for a price that far below the metal value implied by the stated specifications.
FJNYC Pricing Policy
At Fantastic Jewelry NYC, every chain specifies its exact gram weight per variant. You can take that gram weight, apply the formula above with the current spot price, and verify that our price is fair before you buy. If the math does not work out, ask us — we will explain the components of the price or acknowledge an error. We have been doing this in the Diamond District since 2012 because transparent pricing is the only way to build a repeat customer base.
